Lots of towns are known for different things. My town is a college town. Salem, Massachusetts is known for the famous witch trials. These towns are known for their awesome mountain biking spots and how welcoming they are to mountain bikers from all over.

Moab, Utah is top on National Geographic’s List of American mountain biking towns.

With sunbaked desert riding, high-alpine singletrack in the nearby La Sal Mountains, and everything in between, it’s possible to ride in Moab year-round, but temperatures are most comfortable in spring and fall (fall being your best chance to ride the Whole Enchilada).

Moab has several trails for everything from beginners to experts. Moab is also very close to Canyon-lands National Park and the scenic view along the Colorado River make Moab a must-go spot for mountain bikers.

Oakridge, Oregon is also a hot spot for mountain biking in America. It’s expert-level, winding, narrow paths and tranquil watering holes around the root make Oakridge a dream destination for mountain bikers.

Brevard, North Carolina is an amazing town for mountain bikers. It is on the blue ridge parkway and the scenes are more than breath taking.

Willmington, NY is a favorite mountain biking location in the gorgeous Adirondack mountains of Upstate New York. A couple of the reasons for Willmington being a fan favorite is

  1. “Hardy Hour” every Friday night- group riding through the challenging network of singletrack and tricky slick slab climbs
  2. Whiteface Mountain Bike Park with 2,426-foot downhill runs, the longest vertical drop in the East Coast.

East Burke, Vt is a little-known gem of a town with such vast interconnected trails rolling through fields and meadows that bikers often report feeling like they are flying on the trails.

Harrisonburg, Va. is designated as both a League of American Bicyclists Bicycle-Friendly Community and IMBA Ride Center, Harrisonburg is becoming a haven for anyone with a garage full of bikes. In a demonstration of partnership, the City of Harrisonburg teamed up with Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition to bring purpose-built bike trails of all levels to downtown Harrisonburg. In addition to the Rocktown trails, townsfolk can ride one of three epics, Massanutton Resort’s flow trails, or spend a day barely scratching the surface of the George Washington National Forest. The town even comes together to celebrate trails and trailwork during the annual Shenandoah Festival.

So, next time you are thinking of planning an out of town mountain biking adventure consider these towns as your top spots for thrills and memories.
