PLENTY of bike races have ended with a competitors stealing victory. But not too many have started with a random bloke stealing a competitor’s bike.

In scenes that truly have to be watched to be believed, a charity bike race in Surfers Paradise had a totally bizarre beginning today when an interloper ran into the yet-to-pedal peloton and made off with one of the competitor’s bicycles.

Even more strangely, he did it to the strains of the national anthem, crying out “I win, I win.”

Well, sort of. Because in keeping with the charity nature of the event, everyone was willing to pitch in to bring the thief down.

An on-looker eating his breakfast was the first to try, albeit unsuccessfully. And after the bike pincher did a U-turn and rode back on a beachside footpath, another bystander stepped in with a cup of water to the face.

Eventually, local radio station employee Lachlan Boyle stepped up with the decisive tackle and said his foe was quite complimentary.

“He actually said ‘good tackle guys, well done. He was all happy,” Mr Boyle said.

“What am I getting arrested for?” the man could be heard asking.

The answer, it would seem, was stealing a competitor’s bicycle.

The race was being held to raise money for Mates 4 Mates, which supports wounded soldiers.
