Grocery shopping today can seem like an Olympic sport. Picking the right produce, reading labels and planning perfectly balanced meals can be exhausting. I try to vary my recipes and meals with my family, but I do have a standard grocery list that I cannot live without.

My standby lists contains some well-known super foods, or just family favorites, but all have nutrients that keep us healthy and help prevent chronic disease. Add these ten healthy foods to your weekly grocery list to keep you and your family healthy.

avocado stand

1. Avocados

Avocados are the perfect fruit. They are high in omega 3 fatty acids which may help to improve heart health and lower cholesterol.

They are also high in fiber and other essential vitamins and minerals. I usually have half an avocado a day (even the overripe avocados!) either alongside eggs or on a salad.

berries farmer's market

2. Berries

I am so excited that summer is upon us because that means it is berry season!

Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cherries are all wonderful choices to add to your grocery cart because they are high in antioxidants which help to fight off free radicals.

coconut oil

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is pretty amazing, and, let’s face it, it tastes pretty good too.

Coconut oil is unique because it contains a special kind of saturated fat called medium chain triglycerides which are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides. They are sent straight to the liver which gives us a quick, natural, boost of energy.

I like to put coconut oil on brown rice cakes in the morning after I have had some protein, and I also like to use coconut oil on my skin as a moisturizer.

Cruciferous vegetables

4. Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables include things like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, and Brussel sprouts.

They are high soluble fiber and vitamin C not to mention a whole host of protective phytochemicals. Try to incorporate eat least one of these into your diet every day.

dark chocolate

5. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is actually good for you if you eat a square or two a day, and its even been proven to boost the efficiency of your workout. Unfortunately, more is not better. Sorry!

Make sure you buy dark chocolate that is made with 70 percent cacao or higher. Cacao, in its whole form, is loaded with antioxidants. I have to be honest, I eat dark chocolate because of the health benefits, but it also makes me happy!
